Note 1398634 - Oracle database 11g: Integration in SAP environment

This note provides information about the current release status of Oracle Database Version 11g in the SAP environment.

Oracle Database Version 11g succeeds Oracle Version 10g Release 2.

Release status:

Basically, only 11g Release 2 (11.2) is released in the SAP environment.

Oracle 11.2 release for older SAP releases
A general release is not provided for older SAP releases (SAP R/3 3.1I up to and including SAP R/3 4.6C).

Oracle 11.2 for SAP Kernel 6.40_EX2, 7.x and higher
Oracle Version 11.2 is released for these SAP kernel versions. In these kernel versions, basically only those SAP product versions that were still at least part of SAP Extended Maintenance in 2010 were released for Oracle 11.2.

Schedule for the SAP release of Oracle Version 11.2:
Oracle did not release Version 11.2 for all operating system platforms at the same time, but did so in stages. As a result, the release on the various platforms in the SAP environment also occurred in stages.
The release of Oracle 11.2 took place in three waves. The waves include the Oracle 11.2 release on various operating system platform groups:

Wave 1:
- Linux x86_64 (RHEL 4 & 5, SLES 10 & 11) [no RHEL 4 for 640_EX2]
- Linux x86 (RHEL 4 & 5, SLES 10 & 11) [no RHEL 4 for 640_EX2]
- Solaris x64 (Version 10)
- Solaris SPARC (Version 10)
- HP-UX IA 64 (Version 11.31)
- AIX 64 Bit (Version 5.3 & 6.1)

Wave 2:
- Windows x64
- Windows 32-Bit
- HP-UX PA-RISC (Version 11.31)

Note:

1. Oracle is not planning any Version 11.2 Release for Windows IA64 and Linux IA64 platforms.

2. Oracle has not yet reached a decision regarding 11.2 support of the Linux on Power platform.

Update from April 13, 2011:

For operating system platforms of wave 1 and wave 2, the runtime release, the SAP upgrade release, and the installation/system copy release occurred (for definitions, see below).

(As of SAP Basis Release 7.02, a "System Copy" is possible for 32-bit systems only using the Backup/Restore method.)

Therefore, system copies and Unicode migrations with Oracle 11.2 are also possible for these SAP product versions.

Remark 1:

The new Oracle data type "Securefiles" is released. However, to use this feature, you must apply SAP patch bundle for May 2010. (SAP_112010_201004 for Oracle Release 11.2.0.1). On Windows platforms, you require at least Patch Collection 5.

Remark 2:

RAC support for Oracle Database 11g:
The SAP release of Oracle 11.2 RAC occurs at the same time as the general release of Oracle 11.2 in the SAP environment. For information about Oracle RAC support, see Note 527843. It contains important details about the released RAC configurations.


Definitions/Terms

• Runtime release:

'Runtime' release means that a database upgrade to Oracle 11.2 is supported for existing SAP systems that are released for Oracle 11.2 in principle.

• Upgrade release:

The SAP upgrade or SAP EHP update release means that an SAP upgrade or an SAP EHP update is supported for existing SAP systems on an Oracle 11.2 database.
